VA DISABILITY BENEFITS

2026 VA Disability Calculator

Estimate your combined VA disability rating and 2026 monthly compensation using VA math, including the bilateral factor. Add your service-connected ratings below to calculate your estimated VA rating and current compensation based on your dependent information.

VA combined rating estimator

Add your service-connected disability ratings

Choose a body location, then select the VA percentage for that disability. Add each rating separately.

1. Select the location

Use an arm or leg location when the service-connected disability affects that extremity. This allows the calculator to evaluate the bilateral factor.

2. Select the disability rating

No disability ratings added yet.

Estimator only. This tool estimates a combined schedular VA disability rating using 38 C.F.R. §§ 4.25 and 4.26 and estimates 2026 compensation from published VA rate tables. Optional SMC selections estimate payment only and do not determine whether a Veteran qualifies for SMC, TDIU, dependency status, or other benefits. Paired skeletal-muscle situations outside the arm/leg selections may require separate review.

How VA Disability Ratings Are Calculated

VA disability ratings are not added together using ordinary math. VA uses a combined rating calculation, often called VA math, to determine a Veteran’s overall disability percentage. The calculation may also include the VA bilateral factor when qualifying disabilities affect both sides of the body. After all ratings are combined, VA rounds the final value to the nearest 10%.

1. VA Combined Rating Math

VA combines disability ratings from highest to lowest. Each additional rating is applied to the portion of the Veteran that remains unaffected—not simply added to the previous rating.

2. VA Bilateral Factor

When qualifying disabilities affect both arms, both legs, or paired skeletal muscles, VA may apply the bilateral factor before combining those disabilities with the remaining ratings.

3. Final VA Rating

After all applicable ratings are combined, VA rounds the final combined value to the nearest 10%. Values ending in 5 through 9 round up; values ending in 1 through 4 round down.

Understanding Your VA Combined Disability Rating

A VA combined disability rating is not calculated by simply adding individual disability percentages together. VA uses what is commonly called VA math to determine a Veteran’s overall disability rating.

Each disability is considered from highest to lowest. After the highest disability percentage is applied, the next disability is calculated against the portion of the Veteran that remains unaffected. This process continues until all applicable service-connected disability ratings have been combined.

That is why a Veteran with several individual ratings may have a final combined rating that is lower than the total obtained by simply adding the percentages together.

The Valor 4 Vet 2026 VA Disability Calculator performs this combined rating calculation automatically and rounds the final combined value to the nearest 10%.

How the VA Bilateral Factor Works

The VA bilateral factor can affect the combined disability rating when qualifying service-connected disabilities involve both sides of the body, such as disabilities affecting both arms or both legs.

When the bilateral factor applies, VA first combines the qualifying bilateral disabilities. VA then adds 10% of the combined bilateral value before that value is combined with the Veteran’s remaining disability ratings.

For example, disabilities involving the right knee and left knee may qualify for the bilateral factor when the requirements of VA regulations are met.

Our VA bilateral factor calculator automatically evaluates the arm and leg locations selected in the calculator and applies the bilateral factor when appropriate.

Because the bilateral factor is calculated before the remaining disabilities are combined, it can change the Veteran’s final combined VA disability rating.

Estimate Your 2026 VA Disability Compensation

After calculating your combined rating, this 2026 VA disability calculator also provides an estimated monthly and annual VA disability compensation amount.

The compensation estimate is based on the Veteran’s calculated disability rating and the 2026 VA disability compensation rates effective December 1, 2025.

Veterans with qualifying disability ratings may also receive additional compensation for eligible dependents. The calculator can estimate compensation based on information about a:

  • Spouse
  • Children under age 18
  • Qualifying children between ages 18 and 23 attending school
  • Dependent parents
  • Spouse receiving Aid and Attendance

This allows the calculator to function as both a VA rating calculator and a VA compensation calculator rather than showing only a combined disability percentage.

VA Disability Pay With Dependents

VA disability compensation for Veterans rated 30% or higher may change based on eligible dependents.

After calculating your VA disability rating, use the Add dependents or SMC section of the calculator to enter your dependent information. The estimated monthly compensation will update based on the information selected.

The calculator also provides a payment breakdown so you can see how the estimated VA disability payment was calculated.

Because dependency circumstances vary, the result should be treated as an estimate rather than an official determination of dependency or VA benefits.

Special Monthly Compensation and SMC-K

The calculator can also estimate certain Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) payments when you already know the SMC level that applies to your award.

You can select a known SMC level or add up to three SMC-K awards. When SMC-K is entered, the additional SMC-K compensation is shown separately in the payment calculation so you can see how it affects the estimated monthly payment.

This feature estimates the payment amount only. It does not determine whether a Veteran qualifies for SMC, SMC-K, or a particular level of Special Monthly Compensation.

Frequently Asked Questions About the VA Disability Calculator

How does a VA disability calculator work?

A VA disability calculator combines individual service-connected disability ratings using VA’s combined ratings method rather than ordinary addition. The calculated combined value is then rounded to the nearest 10% to determine the estimated final VA disability rating.

Why don’t VA disability ratings simply add together?

VA evaluates each additional disability against the portion of the Veteran that remains unaffected. For example, ratings of 50%, 30%, and 20% do not equal a 100% VA disability rating. Using VA math, those ratings produce a combined value of 72%, which rounds to a 70% final rating.

What is the difference between a VA rating calculator and a VA compensation calculator?

A VA rating calculator estimates the combined disability percentage. A VA compensation calculator estimates the monthly payment associated with that rating. The Valor 4 Vet calculator does both by calculating the combined rating first and then estimating VA disability compensation.

Does this calculator include the VA bilateral factor?

Yes. The calculator evaluates qualifying disabilities affecting both arms or both legs and applies the VA bilateral factor when appropriate based on the selections entered.

Does the calculator include dependents?

Yes. For disability ratings where VA provides additional compensation for eligible dependents, you can enter a spouse, children, qualifying school-age children, and dependent parents to estimate the applicable compensation amount.

Does this VA disability calculator use 2026 rates?

Yes. The calculator uses the 2026 VA disability compensation rates effective December 1, 2025 for its compensation estimates.

Can I calculate SMC-K with this calculator?

Yes. If you already know that SMC-K applies, you can add up to three SMC-K awards to the compensation calculation. The calculator displays the additional SMC-K amount separately in the payment breakdown.

Does this calculator determine whether I qualify for VA disability benefits or SMC?

No. The calculator estimates combined disability ratings and compensation based on the information entered. It does not make a VA benefits decision or determine entitlement to a disability rating, dependency benefits, TDIU, or Special Monthly Compensation.
